West Ski Team Handbook
“Attitude
and Effort!”
West Ski Team
Expectations 07/08
Cross country skiing can be a hugely fun
sport, and provides a great way to enjoy and appreciate the out doors during Alaska winters. The racing component adds an array of
personal challenges for skiers including improving their: fitness, technique,
strategy, preparedness, and social skills.
As coaches, our basic expectations for ski team members are that you
will:
§
Try
§
Show up
§
Help the
team
§
Show
respect for others
It is our hope that we can help both
individuals and the team as a whole to excel in this sport. Taking the challenge is up to you!
As coaches we are responsible for your
safety and well-being several hours a day, six days a week, and we need to
lay out the rules. Most importantly,
remember this: Treat others as you want to be treated …… You usually know
when you’re doing something you shouldn’t be doing- Are we right? Well, just
don’t do it and everything will be cool.
We’re all in this because we love skiing, are excited to
work with the team, and want to have fun. We’re not making millions and don’t
want to be cops. Don’t make us do it,
we won’t be happy, and then, chances are, you won’t be happy. Here are the team rules.
- Attendance is not optional. If you are on the team, we expect you to come
to practice. Unless you have a pre-arranged exception with us, please be
at practices. Attendance will be taken by team managers on a daily
basis. Your absence will be noticed. There are, of course, excused
absences. Doctors appointments, family emergencies, etc. Sickness is
also a reason to miss practice. However, if you’re too sick to miss
practice, then you should also be too sick to go shopping with your
friends or play video games. At this point, we’ll talk about ways to
fight the sickness and get you ready and going again.
- Races
are not optional… We are a ski RACING team. Don’t be scared,
this doesn’t mean you have to be super fast. In fact, you can come in
last in a race and as long as it’s apparent that you tried, that’s okay.
The team will eventually be broken up into squads and racing in the
“open” category shouldn’t be nerve-racking. If you’re anxious about
this, please come talk to us. If
for some reason you are going to miss a race, tell us one week in
advance.
- Letters. To letter you must have at least 75%
attendance. Ways to earn a letter include:
- Racing on the State Meet team.
- Placing in the top 35 in five or more races.
- Participating as a team captain.
- Participation awards for seniors who have
been on the team for four years.
- Discretionary award based on major contributions to the Team.
- BE ON TIME! We are a huge group; please don’t waste everyone else’s time by
being late.
- Buses. When
we have scheduled buses, you are expected to ride. It’s part of
the team camaraderie and should be fun. In past years the district has
had a shortage of buses, and this year may be no different. The
situation can be frustrating and calls for a bit of flexibility and
understanding. Please be patient with us.
- Competition
Requirements. All ski team members must have successfully completed 10 practices before
our first competition on December 1st.
We will have a month of practices before the first official race.
- Alcohol and Drugs will result in either a
suspension or expulsion from the team. Just don’t go there!
- Froshing/hazing is unacceptable behavior, and against school district policy.
We are all members of the same team.
Teammates do not hurt or humiliate one another.
- Academics. Ski team members must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, and currently be passing 4
classes. James, Mereidi, Chip,
and I can offer you advice and help if you need it.
- Talk to the coaches. We are
here for you. If you are having
skiing, personal, or academic issues, we can help you. (Believe it or
not, we’ve successfully made it through many of the problems you may
face.) We want to know how you’re
doing and hope to have 1-on-1 communication with everyone!
- Take care of yourself. Don’t get sick, injured, or lost by being
stupid. Use common sense.
- Write your name on your gear - it will get mixed up and you want to be able
to tell what’s yours!
- Respect your equipment, respect team equipment - remember that it has to
last you and the team several seasons of racing.
- We are a team. We expect everyone to cheer loud at
races for all teammates!
Attendance at the award ceremonies is mandatory! We represent WEST!
